  • Counts to 10 (even if without full number sense).

  • Loves pretend play with social roles.
  • Dresses in simple clothes and uses the toilet with little help.
  • Attention span: 15-25 minutes per activity.

Tips to get the most out of play

Ride the 'why?' wave

At 3, everything is a question. Turn each 'why' into conversation and expand vocabulary.

Offer choices

Give two options: 'paint or puzzle?'. A sense of control lowers meltdowns and lifts engagement.

Longer attention

By age 3 kids can stick with one activity for 15-25 minutes. Use it for multi-step projects.

Pretend play is work

Kitchen, doctor, store — symbolic play is the cognitive job of this age. Don't 'correct' it; join in.

Introduce small responsibilities

At 3, kids can (and love to) help: putting toys away, tossing dirty clothes in the hamper, brushing teeth. A picture-based task chart turns it into a game — and builds autonomy early.
